Mokko Seishin

Mokko Seishin is a Japanese-American owned design and fabrication studio in Brooklyn, founded by Robert Seishin Rurup. The studio handcrafts heirloom-quality furniture and objects from domestically and ethically sourced natural materials, primarily hardwoods, using modern and traditional tools alike. Every piece is made by hand with two intentions held together: the longest possible life cycle, and the lowest possible environmental impact once that cycle ends. The work draws on craft traditions that value natural materials and the connection between objects and daily life — Japanese Mingei philosophy, traditional timber architecture, Nordic design, and vernacular objects shaped by generations of use. Born and raised in northern New Jersey, Rurup first studied architecture before turning to furniture, learning through hands-on work rather than formal training. A decade in studios across New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York led him to found Mokko Seishin in 2024.
