Gui Moufarrige

Gui Moufarrige is a Brazilian ceramic artist working in Austin, where he hand-builds functional ceramics using Nerikomi and Neriage — techniques that build pattern directly into the clay body rather than applying it to the surface. His plates, bowls, platters, and vessels explore the duality of function and art through stained clay, layered composition, and restrained form. The pieces invite a second look: composed and functional from a distance, they reveal movement, pressure, and subtle variation up close. His work draws on the quiet complexity of the natural world and the way nature builds pattern over time — petals opening, water shifting, roots spreading, stone carrying traces of age. Rather than translate nature literally, he studies its rhythms, working in the tension between control and chance. Having grown up across cultures and languages, Moufarrige also studies how art influences wellbeing and how people use objects to explore identity and memory.
